Introduction

The LSU Summer Opportunity Program is a summer bridge program for admitted LSU students. The program targets students admitted in special categories or who plan to major in highly selective fields. The Summer Opportunity Program offers an opportunity for students enhance academic skills and improve the chance for a successful academic career.

The LSU Summer Opportunity Program is designed to provide a challenging summer experience for participants that will fully develop their writing, research, and study skills. Participants in the Summer Opportunity Program can be expected to experience an environment that fosters personal development and strengthens employment skills.

Student Eligibility

Students cannot apply to this program. Eligible students will be selected based on their profile in at least three of the following selection criteria:

  • Expect to major in a highly-selective college or department;
  • Admitted by committee or in a special talent category;
  • Earned an ACT score of 22 or below.
  • Admitted to LSU without one or more of the required 17.5 academic units

Highlights

Each student participating in the Summer Opportunity Program will:

  • Enroll in six to nine hours of summer school coursework, including the appropriate English class and another course selected with a counselor's assistance;
  • Reside on campus with other Summer Opportunity Students;
  • Complete a Study Strategies course provided by the Center for Academic Success;
  • Attend educational and self-improvement, and skills enhancement seminars;
  • Seek employment on campus.

Scholarship

Each Summer Opportunity Program participant will receive one time summer semester scholarship which includes summer tuition, room and partial board. The scholarship only covers six hours of coursework; students wishing to take additional courses will be responsible for paying for additional tuition. Students will also be responsible for paying for books and LSU's technology and Excellence fees. Each student will also be encouraged to seek an on-campus part-time job to enhance work skills.
